Today's Readings
This week the Scriptures Of the daily Mass have introduced us to the Book of Hebrews. (Read more) In general, the author of this book, or letter, was most likely speaking to the early Jewish Christians, who were indeed the continuation of the Hebrew journey to discover the promise of God in Jesus Christ. Mainly, this author sought not to respond to any kind of persecution, or problems with leadership, but rather a crumbling from within, as the Church faced the apostasies of its day, which is a fancy way of linking it with us as we too seek to redefine God in OUR image so as to stay nice and comfortable in our somewhat selfish humanity. OUCH Greg! With that said, yesterday's Mass began to help define Christ for who is really is, as the author asked and taught, "What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you care for him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, subjecting all things under his feet." (Hebrews 2: 6-8)
In today's readings, the author coninues with his confident re-introduction of Christ, defining our place as ones who are to be helped by him.
"Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham." Hebrews 2:16
In today's Gospel from Mark, we see Jesus' helping hand reach into the life of Peter in the healing of his mother-in-law. He visits her, prays over her, and asks her to rise and continue her work. She does in fact rise, and continue her work, and so must we. Christ visits us to help us, and heal us, and get us back to the work of living our lives for His Father, our God!
[Jesus] told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” Mark 1: 37-38
May our purpose be His!
