My own daughter said to me this morning in a wonderfully sarcastic tone, "Happy Monday Dad!". Her not so warm greeting to the beginning of this first week of Ordinary Time was perfect. Another week has begun, and the holidays are now, by most calendars, officially behind us. I don't know where you live, but here the temperature has dropped 40 degrees, and a cold rain marks this triumphant start of just another grey, January week in the cusp of just another day of winter. This all has caused me to start humming along with Bob Geldof and the famed Boomtown Rats, who have been simply wondering since the early 1980's if someone could explain all of this and "Tell me why I don't like Mondays."
Well one thing I can share is just how fun God can be at times like this. Look how He begins to "toy with me" during this morning's Morning Prayer
We hear that some of you are unruly, not keeping busy but acting like busy-bodies. We enjoin all such, and we urge them strongly in the Lord Jesus Christ, to earn the food they eat by working quietly. You must never grow weary of doing what is right, brothers.
2 Thessalonians 3:11-13
Today's Gospel welcomes Ordinary Time with Christ following up on His baptism from John, announcing that the "reign of God is at hand", beginning His earthly ministry (probably on a Monday of course) calling on a few fishermen to leave their nets, and follow Him. Read Mark 1: 14-20
I strongly believe that as Christians, Christ's work must be our work, and our work must further the work of Christ. In reading the Gospel, I also thinks it's fair to wonder if I am being called this morning to leave my job and follow Christ? One could say yes, but in the spirit of Paul's Letter to the Thessalonians in this morning's prayer, it seems that we all must continue doing what we do, and allow Christ to lead us to something more.
Please note at this point of today's GregBlog, and on top of all the other things that make this Monday a "perfect Monday", the power went out! This means that at this point of the entry, I had to wait a 1/2 an hour! So now that I am back online, and God continues to "toy with me" on this First Monday of Ordinary Time, I guess I'll just follow Christ, and the spirit today's readings, and just go to work... But I'm not gonna stop humming my song:
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.
