While on retreat with the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School's XBSS Leadership Retreat, I participated in another one of those "Dear God..." letter writing exercises... I love 'em! Here another Dear God Letter from Greg...
"Dear God... Don't know if you noticed, but I pray that you can make it better down here. I don't need a big reduction in the price of beer; but all the people that you made in your image, they're all fighting in the streets, because they can't make opinions meet about God." (from the song "Dear God" by XTC)
Actually Lord, that's not all together true in my world. I am blessed to be around a multitude of faithful believers in the power of love, justice and hope. My world is comfortable with notions of an understood base of You. My world is confident that tomorrow, there will be a meal, and a home. My world offers me opportunities to share You and be enriched by You.
My world, however, is not as small as I think it is.
YOUR WORLD... is filled with questions, doubt, hunger, need and life. YOUR WORLD is full of joy and pain, hope and wonder. YOUR WORLD suffers, and so feels lost or forgotten, hence making YOU the brunt of blame and supposed inaction.
But with YOU in my life, my world becomes YOURS, and with all that needs to be done, OUR task is to keep loving. With good news in my heart, YOU have moved me to ask the age-old question, "How can I keep from singing?"
So, YOUR will be done O Lord. My world is YOURS. Help me bring YOUR world into theirs, so that OUR world is a better place for all... Especially those who dare to begin their day with the common phrase: "Dear God..."
